Dryad: Nature Takes a Seat
Inspired by the ancient forests and the mythical tree-nymphs known as Dryads, this chair embodies the deep connection between nature and design. Just as Dryads are the guardians of trees, the Dryad chair reflects the enduring spirit of the forest, where roots seamlessly transform into a solid trunk and branches gracefully reach out.
The chair’s organic, flowing shape captures this natural progression, symbolizing the life cycle of a tree—from its deep roots to its towering branches. With its thick, sturdy base, Dryad stands as a testament to the strength and permanence of the virgin forests—immovable, steadfast, and a symbol of the trees that have stood for centuries.
Created for the Primal Chair competition, Dryad draws inspiration from the untouched, primeval forests where nature remains pure and undisturbed. The weight of the chair is a deliberate choice, reflecting the immovability of these ancient giants and inviting users to experience a moment of stillness, much like the serene forests themselves.
Dryad is more than just a piece of furniture; it is an invitation to pause, connect with the primal world, and admire the enduring beauty of nature.

With a substantial base that grounds the design, Dryad offers both stability and a tactile connection to its source of inspiration. The chair’s generous proportions are carefully balanced; it is robust yet elegant, with dimensions that invite the user to experience a sense of calm and rootedness. Its smooth, flowing contours are carved to support the body, echoing the gentle embrace of a tree’s canopy.
The material choice enhances the organic feel, using wood that showcases its natural grain and texture. The chair’s finish maintains the raw beauty of the wood, allowing the natural patterns to tell their own story. This attention to detail ensures that Dryad is not just a functional piece of furniture but a sculptural statement that brings the serenity of the forest into any space.
The Primal Chair Competition
The Primal Chair competition calls on designers to rediscover and celebrate the raw, untamed beauty of the natural world. Participants are invited to create chairs that capture the essence of nature's enduring strength and tranquility, drawing inspiration from ancient forests, rugged landscapes, and the primal forces that shape our environment.
This competition is more than a design challenge—it's a tribute to the timeless purity of untouched nature. Designers are encouraged to craft seating that not only tells a story but also embodies the deep, authentic connection between humans and the natural world, creating pieces that stand as symbols of nature's unspoiled, enduring presence.
"By taking part in this design competition, you get a chance to materialize your design idea in the primeval forest – contemporary human relations. The aim is to create a simple, functional, and ergonomically designed chair, which will, in addition to its primary function, raise awareness of the user (contemporary person) about the importance of coexistence between man and nature."
