The Terra set: bench and table, was designed to capture Riva’s values of handiwork, organic materials, and classic design. These sculptures, which are made completely of wood, give a refined simplicity that feels at home in any setting, whether it be an outdoor patio, garden, or modern living room. They do this by striking a balance between powerful geometric forms and organic lines.
Terra Bench,
The bench is designed to be carved from a single piece of wood, it exemplifies Riva 1920's dedication to sustainability and fine craftsmanship. From the side, the design looks like a sort of inverted "C," yet the organic curves soften the geometry. The bench has a solid yet airy feel to it thanks to the combination of strong, blocky shapes and flowing lines. While its soft curves provide a sense of natural ease, the massive, monolithic form conveys a sense of stability and strength. Terra Table,
The accompanying table takes on a similarly geometric yet fluid form. It appears to be in the shape of a "T" from the profile, with a continuous base that spans the whole length of the table. The base functions as a single, cohesive support structure rather than depending on conventional pillars or legs, giving the table a distinctive appearance. What differentiates this table from more traditional block-like tables is the organic, flowing design on the underside of the tabletop. The bottom edge's gentle, organic waves lend the top, which seems grounded and substantial, a surprise lightness and visual intrigue. Because of this deliberate attention to detail, the table is transformed from a practical object into a sculpture.
